Charles “Dwayne” Monroe was born to Louie Monroe and Elizabeth Catherine Phillips Monroe on August 19, 1930 in Wolfe City, Texas. He attended grade school and secondary school in Sherman, Texas before graduating high school in Wolfe City in 1949.
Dwayne started the second part of his life by marrying his high school sweetheart, Frankie Josephine Wall in August of 1950. This union was blessed with three sons Larry Monroe, Gary Monroe and Randy Monroe. The Quaker Oats Company played a large role in their family lives as it provided the family with opportunities throughout the years. Dwayne started as a Pre-Mix Operator and climbed his way through the ranks to retire from Quaker Oats Company as a Grain Purchasing Manager. A move to Memphis, TN with Quaker Oats allowed for the advancement of Dwayne’s education. He attended both Memphis State University and The University of Tennessee at Memphis. Quaker Oats would go on to move the family to Chicago, Illinois and finally Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After the move to Cedar Rapids, the marriage of Dwayne and Frankie dissolved, but this granted Dwayne the opportunity to add another great love story to his life. He married Lenore Vahl in February of 1981, and gained a daughter, Vickie Hagen, with this union. The pair have lived a long and happy life together.
Dwayne was a Master Mason and served as Past Master at Bruce Lodge AF & AH in Cedar Rapids, and he was also in Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, Optimist Club, and a member of Toastmasters International. He had many hobbies but was known as an athlete and a musician. Dwayne loved playing football, baseball, basketball, golf, and fishing. Dwayne was a devoted father that never missed a game that his boys played, and made a point to visit Texas to watch his grandchildren play sports, as well. He had a love of guitars, amplifiers, and making music. Playing his guitars was one of his favorite activities. This was a hobby that he passed down to his sons; He loved being able to pick with his sons and share that musical bond with the three of them. He was a huge fan of Chet Atkins, and followed his music until the very end.
