Bennie Bench Scott, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected neurosurgeon, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 6, 2025. He was 81.
Born in Wolfe City, Texas, Bennie was the son of Benjamin Worth Scott and Cecil Inez Bench Scott. After graduating from Wolfe City High School in 1962, he attended East Texas State University and went on to earn his medical degree from Oklahoma University Medical School in 1970. He completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Michigan in 1977, where he also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Bennie dedicated his professional life to caring for others. He practiced at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas until his retirement in 2005, serving patients at one of the region’s most respected academic and trauma hospitals. His skill, steady hands, and deep compassion helped countless patients and their families during their most difficult moments.
A devoted family man, Bennie coached his sons’ sports teams and made time for his children despite the demands of his career. He was a longtime member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher. He loved Sooner football, golf, and skiing—but he was happiest outdoors. Bennie was an avid outdoorsman who cherished time spent hunting and fishing on the lake. He also deeply loved his many dogs over the years, each one bringing him joy and companionship.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Judy Scott. Bennie and Judy were childhood sweethearts whose devotion to one another never wavered. Their marriage was a steady foundation of love, loyalty, and shared memories—rooted in small-town beginnings and carried through a lifetime of family, faith, and resilience.
He is also survived by his sons Jake Scott (Kacey) and Brett Scott; and his cherished granddaughters, Sibby and Scarlett Scott. Bennie adored his granddaughters and delighted in their baby years, sharing sweet moments with them before the progression of his Alzheimer’s disease.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacy Nichole Scott, born August 27, 1977.
A burial will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas, on August 9, 2025. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Park Cities Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to AWARE Dallas, (Aware – Dedicated to Fighting Alzheimer’s) an organization dedicated to supporting families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.
Bennie’s life was marked by quiet strength, service to others, and deep love for his family. He will be remembered always with admiration, gratitude, and love.
Bennie was not only one of my best friends, but also very close to my wife, daughter, and son. He touched each of our lives with forever memories.
Bennie was always fun to be around, whether it was at a party, on vacations, golfing, fishing, hunting or just hanging out.
Most people know Bennie was an incredible neurosurgeon, but he was also very compassionate when dealing with difficult medical situations.
I will miss my friend and cherish the memories.
