November 10, 1920 – August 18, 2012 Theron Robert (T.R.) Sharp DO (Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon) died Saturday August 18, 2012. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 10, 1920 he lived a long, happy, productive life. He graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and began practice in Reeceville, Wisconsin in 1944. He quickly became a beloved citizen of Reeceville and when he moved to Dallas, Texas in August 1960, the city named the street in front of his home and clinic, Sharp Avenue.
With his wife, a Texas native, he and the family came to Texas where he reestablished his medical practice in Mesquite, Texas. In 1978 his son, Dr. Doug Sharp joined him in practice. He officially retried from medicine in 2004.
During his years of active practice in Texas the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) (Ft. Worth) was born. He was one of the early promoters of this endeavor and worked diligently toward helping bring the college to life. He was also one of the Texas Osteopathic Physicians instrumental in promoting the certification of General Practice as a sub-set of Osteopathic Medicine. He was the first General Practice physician to be awarded Certification in his chosen field. Over a lifetime of community and professional service he was recognized with numerous National and State awards and honors.
T. R. was preceded in death by infant son, Walter Smith; his wife of 35 years, Marjorie Sharp (1978); sisters Joan Hyland (2009) and Evangeline Morris (Aug. 10, 2012). He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Christian Sharp; daughter and son-in-law Lee Carol an Tom Copeland of Arlington, TX; daughter, Lanier Horton of Plano, TX; and son, Douglas Robert Sharp, DO, of Katy, TX; Grandchildren, Thomas Robert Copeland and wife, Doreen and great-grandson, Thomas; Scot Copeland and wife, Maggie and great-grand sons, Tyson and Mason; Joshua Copeland; Leslie Lanier Bearce; and Bradley Horton and Jess. Also surviving is one brother, Virgil Sharp, DO and wife Joan of Wisconsin.
Services are scheduled on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at St. Stephen United Methodist Church, 2520 Oates Dr., Mesquite, TX 75150 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
