And he still found time to share his love for music and people by singing each week at the Smith Nursing Home, calling square dancing, participating in Hymn Sing services, the Salvation Army First Friday Night Singing, and delivering Meals on Wheels to the homebound around Wolfe City. Vernon was committed to serving his neighbors and community serving for many years as the secretary of the Wolfe City Kiwanis Club and as Post Commander of the local American Legion post.

Following his 1987 retirement from American National Insurance Co. he enjoyed substitute teaching, working around the church and helping people around Wolfe City.
