Vernon was committed to serving his neighbors and community serving for many years as the secretary of the Wolfe City Kiwanis Club and as Post Commander of the local American Legion post.

Following his 1987 retirement from American National Insurance Co. he enjoyed substitute teaching, working around the church and helping people around Wolfe City.
