Charlotte Mae McBroom, 70, of Cumby, Texas, passed away on December 11, 2025, in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was born on June 23, 1955, in Fort Knox, Kentucky, to Charles Lee Gunn and Betty Lou (Van Hoozen) Gunn.
Charly grew up in Plano, Texas where she graduated from Plano East High School in 1974. She later worked for the Campbell ISD where she made many friends and met the love of her life. She married Donald McBroom on March 8, 2003 in Commerce, Texas. When she retired, she and Donnie bought a home outside of Campbell where their children and grandchildren spent many holidays, summer visits, and weekends with Grandma and Papa Donnie.
Charly loved sci-fi movies and fried green tomatoes, was an avid reader, loved Dr. Pepper and coffee and nothing made her happier than her grandchildren. Mom was known for her back scratches, her pecan pie (one for which she received years of teasing when she forgot to add the sugar one Christmas), her comforting potato soup, and fudge that everyone loved (and cherish the recipe). Mom was a homebody but loved walking along the beach and enjoying a margarita while watching the sun set over the ocean. She leaves behind a legacy of stubbornness, mischievous and playful facial expressions, and an always open heart for new people and places. She was much loved.
Charlotte is survived by her children: Jodie Ledat, Sheila Smith and her husband Jessy, David Self and his fiancé Judie, and Ginny Mathes and her husband David. She leaves behind many beloved grandchildren who were the joy of her life: Ciara McKee and her fiancé Logan, Sealan Ledat, Noah Ledat, Chrissa Somerset and her wife Stacie, Maeghan Sherwood and her husband James Dees, Korrighan Smith and his wife Julia, Shyian Smith, Victoria Maldonado and her husband Josh, Jaylynn Elder, Kaylee Elder, and Audrey Elder as well as seven great grandchildren. Charlotte is also survived by her siblings, Darlene “Susan” Fowler and Lendon Thomas Jr. and his wife Lynn.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald McBroom; and her sister, Charlene Kay (Gunn) McCune.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Sulphur Springs Health and Rehabilitation and Chambers Hospice for their care and support of Mom.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 15 at 1:00 PM at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas.
